Mathematica 6 Released:  A WorkLife FrameWork 2.0 to follow very soon...

Posted on: Thursday 5/3, 2007;  11:09 AM

I have been working diligently over the past few months to assure compatibility of A WorkLife FrameWork with the just released Mathematica 6.   Betas of new versions of A WorkLife FrameWork are now ready and I will be releasing the new versions shortly.  (This includes a new version compatible with mathematica versions 5.2 and 5.1 as well as the compatibility update fro Mathematica version 6.)  All upgrades have been and continue to be  free.

A WorkLife FrameWork consists of well over 50,000 lines of top level Mathematica code—much of it FrontEnd code—and Mathematica 6 is hugely enhanced in the Front End.  This opens up all sorts of possibilities for the future development of A WorkLife FrameWork.  In fact, development of A WorkLife FrameWork has been quite limited because of the lack of user interface constructs in Mathematica before version 6. But in spite of this I have been able to create—for Mathematica versions 5.2 and 5.1—a huge base of useful user interface based tools for enhancing and extending the reach of Mathematica into areas to broadly enhance the way you do your day-to-day work.

I am committed to continuing the development of A WorkLife FrameWork into the far future. Part of the reason for this is that I just enjoy creating additional features that extend the reach of Mathematica.  But another important reason is that, since I started developing A WorkLife FrameWork for my own purposes, I found that it has become essential to how I work in Mathematica—both in my technical work and in my creative use of Mathematica in all sorts of modes of communication and organization (as one simple example, for this blog). Yet another reason is that, as the base of users of A WorkLife FrameWork continues to increase, I find it very fulfilling to respond to user requests for more ways to extend the product.  So pass on your suggestions!

Now that I have essentially completed the compatibility update for A WorkLife FrameWork and Mathematica 6, I am now finding that I am using Mathematica 6 much more.

As you probably already know, the way a user typically uses A WorkLife FrameWork is through it's direct user interface with Palettes, buttons, dialog boxes, and so on.  However, for fine control, one can go deeper and use the functional interface.  A count of the number of new functions and parameters introduced by A WorkLife FrameWork gives a bit of a sense of its scope.

Here are the current numbers for the how many functions and parameters are added to Mathematica when A WorkLife FrameWork is loaded:

This is the number of A WorkLife FrameWork functions and parameters (including those intended for users and those that may be documented in a future release):

"BE3387193765_1.gif"

"BE3387193765_2.gif"

And this is the total number of A WorkLife FrameWork functions and parameters that are currently documented and  intended for users:

"BE3387193765_3.gif"

"BE3387193765_4.gif"

If you currently have version 1.1 of A WorkLife FrameWork for mathematica 5.2 or 5.1, then the upgrade to A WorkLife FrameWork 2.0 is free if you are now using Mathematica 6.  If you are currently using Mathematica 5.2 or 5.1 then you should still purchase A WorkLife FrameWork 1.1 and the upgrade to A WorkLife FrameWork 2.0 or later (or 1.2) will still be free when you upgrade to Mathematica 6.

In fact, if you are continuing to use mathematica 5.2 or 5.1 for a while, I will also soon be releasing A WorkLife FrameWork 1.2 which will incorporate many of the additions to A WorkLife FrameWork 2.0 in a version compatible with Mathematica 5/2 and 5.1.

To be clear, here is the (simple) compatibility chart for A WorkLife FrameWork and Mathematica:

A WorkLife FrameWork Version 1.1 and 1.2 : Requires Mathematica 5.2 or 5.1 (incompatible with Mathematica 6)

A WorkLife FrameWork Version 2.0 : Requires Mathematica 6.0 or greater (incompatible with Mathematica 5.2 or 5.1)

So, within the next week I hope to release both A WorkLife FrameWork Versions 2.0 and 1.2.  For those of you who already have A WorkLife FrameWork Version 1.1 and want to upgrade to the Beta before the official release, just let me know and we can arrange it.
