Opening a set of files

Posted on: Monday 9/18, 2006;  9:24 PM

One of the things that I often need to do when I return to a project is to open a set of files to work with—perhaps ones associated with several different applications, and also a number of which might be hyperlinks to web addresses.

Generally one way to do this is to place all of the needed files in a single directory and to then open them all at once from your operating system's file interface.  Of course this is often not very feasible nor may it be a sensible way to organize the files in question.  Also, if some of the files are URLs then items representing the URLs must exist in the directory so that they will be opened in your browser.

In A WorkLife FrameWork there is a tool that takes care of this sort of organizational problem.  This involves creating a FileSet and then clicking on the Open File Set button in the Additional Tools Palette under the Other Tools sub-palette.

A FileSet is just a name and a set of files or URLs associated with it.   For example, at the moment I have a File Set called "sound" which has a list of Wikipedia URLs associated with Sound in it.

FileSet["sound"]

When I click on the Open File Set button the following dialog opens:

Then, when I click on the "sound" button, all of the given URLs are opened in my default browser.

To add a link to a file set just click on the Add to File Set button and the following dialog opens

Then type the FileSet name in the first field and the URL or full path to a file in the second field  and click on the Add a File button to add it to the FileSet.

This feature of A WorkLife FrameWork  saves you from needing to repeatedly round up and open the files and resources you require to work on a project each time you return to it.
